This first volume of the Mosaic Corpus of Turkey places her among the countries of the Mediterranean world and Western Europe publishing systematically the mosaic wealth in their own lands. The project followed the serious models of Recueil general des mosaìques de la Gaule and Mosaici antichi in Italia.
The corpus project was initiated at a meeting of mosaic experts from six countries led by M. Şahin and D. Parrish and held at American Research Institute in Turkey.
The first volume of the project covers the mosaics from Xanthos. This volume prepared for publication by Marie-Patricia Raynaud presents, with all their phases, the floor pavements of the East Basilica employing very successfully both opus tessellatum and opus sectile techniques.
Two more aspects of this work need to be underlined: first of all, the magnificent photographs and the successful reconstruction drawings and floor plans of the mosaics, which will provide the reader with a visual festivity.
