Mogao caves at Dunhuang, Gansu province, are the largest gallery of classical Chinese art that remain in good condition. The carving started in the year A. D. 366 during the Eastern Han dynasty. Dun-huang was then an important communications center on the famous "Silk Road", so it had first access to the Buddhist religion and art which were brought in from India. Carvings were carried on through the subsequent generations, so the place became the location of China's earliest group of caved Buddhist temples. Feudal rulers during the mil-lennium from the 4th through the 14th centuries, all devoted believers of Buddhism, never failed to order additional construction at Mogao. This resulted in the excellent works of architecture, painting and sculp-ture that we see to-day. The murals now extant totalling some 45,0
