One of the most satisfactory ways of teaching art is to encourage the pupil to develop the habit of observation. The student's 'eye' is trained by demonstrating that architecture, furniture, and interior decoration are also within the province of the artist. The notion that art is not confined to the galleries or to special occasions is fostered; and by showing the basic techniques of the painter, self-expression is engendered.

This book, as its companion volume, makes up a comprehensive survey of design which will appeal to students and laymen of all ages. In it, the general character of the series remains unchanged: Volume 2 has the same ample documentation as Volume 1 and a similar though expanded, short text, made up of two parts, each of which progresses at its own level. The one, printed in medium-size type, embraces the essentials and provides the necessary fundamental ideas. The other, in similar print, provides a more detailed complementary text.
