A unique experiment was launched a few years ago. A California state government agency awarded a grant to establish the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit consumer education program based in San Diego, California. A team composed of law students, a project attorney and myself researched the many facets of consumer privacy. We produced a series of "fact sheets" and readied them for the big day in November 1992 when our hotline was open to the public. Our phones haven't stopped ringing.
In the intervening years, we have talked with tens of thousands of consumers who have had questions and concerns about privacy. Our book contains hundreds of tips that we have shared with consumers over the years -- complete with addresses, phone numbers, web sites, and useful privacy-protection strategies.
But the book is not just a dry recitation of facts and figures. It is brought to life with stories from our hotline, stories that show how ordinary people have seen their privacy abused.
