Homer made a decisive contribution to the spiritual and intellectual foundations of antiquity; without him there might have been no Troia, no Achilles. Homer composed the Iliad around 730 BC, and later the Odyssey around 700 BC. This towering poet is perhaps the very greatest the world has produced, and the historical impact of his monumental works is comparable to that of the great sacred texts of world religion. His epics are the first poems of our culture to have been transmitted in writing. The myth of the Trojan War and of the fate of those involved survives to the present day in the verses of the Iliad and the Odyssey. That out of the mass of Greek saga the Homeric epics should have been preserved, is surly an indication of their quality.
