Tied by a friendship dating back a long time, Romania and Turkey are united by a geographic parallelism and historical destiny as well. The following words of the Romanian diplomat, Foreign Minister of Romania and twice the President of the League of Nations, Nicolae Titulescu, are fairly appropriate to summarize this fact: “Our countries are ‘sentenced’ by their geographical situation to cooperate and act together as a whoie.” Romania contains the mouths of the Danube, vvhich makes it geographically important. Turkey, having the Straits, has a geostrategic position in the region, too. The interests in the Black Sea ünite the two countries, but even more importantly, they collaborate with the purpose of maintaining the geopolitical balance in the Balkans.
