The Complete Publication of the English drawings in the Royal Library, begun in 1947 with those of Paul and Thomas Sandby, is now continued by a volume covering, roughly speaking, the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and containing the work of artists who were born before 1785 or died before 1830. It comprises, therefore, all periods before the Victorian.
The assemblage is varied and rich. Royal portraits are naturally very numerous, but at the other end of the scale, King George IV's taste for the odd and curious is reflected by the inclusion of many caricatures and representations of unusual incidents.
Hogarth, Rowlandson, David Allan, Bunbury and Woodward are well represented as well aiis the Olivers, Hollar, Blake and Wilkie. Most of the drawings are here reproduced for the first time.
