Despite tremendous growth in general awareness of the history and cultures of the native peoples of North America, two important misconceptions continue to be widespread among those who are not intimately acquainted with the subject.
The first is the belief that American Indian culture was more or less uniform among the hundreds of different tribal groups that inhabited the North American continent prior to the arrival of Europeans. The second misconception is the belief that by the turn of the century, Native American culture was essentially dead, a museum price that could be preserved and re-created but that could not, and did not, undergo any further change or evolution.
In Native Americans: Enduring Cultures and Traditions, Trudy Griffin-Pierce, a professor of cultural anthropology at the University of Arizona, dispels both of these misconceptions.
