From the earliest days of Islam, all true believers have been under obligation to make the journey to Makkah at least once in their lifetime, provided their circumstances allowed.
In past centuries, and almost within living memory, the pilgrims had to endure either a long and dangerous sea voyage, or the blazing heat of the Arabian desert - offering thirst, hunger, and risk of attack. Some walked, others rode on camels or on horseback, in response to the powerfull call to make the pilgrimage.
From every part of the Islamic world, the routes converged on Makkah. In many cases they followed the ancient spice routes and the pre-Islamic caravan routes. These ancient caravan trails were improved to help the pilgrims on their way. One road, however, stands out above all the rest. It is known simply as the Darb Zubaydah - or Zubaydah's Road - in memory of the wife of the 'Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid.
