Appletons Illustrated Hand-Book of American Travel by T. Addison Richards. Second edition in original flexible cloth binding. Publisher: D. Appleton, New York, 1860. The first edition of 1857 was made by joining two separate publications: Part I, Northern & Eastern States and Part II, Southern & Western States. This edition replaced Appleton's New and Complete United States Guide Book. Statistics come from the census of 1850. Part I 209 pages including the index and Part II is 198 pages plus the index and ads in back. Binding is in very good condition. Some corner wear at the fore edge and general fading. Contents clean. Several folding maps with fold separation. Overall a nice tight copy. 5 x 7 ½ inches. Black and white illustrations throughout. Part I has 29 maps, while Part II has 11 maps. Text includes 18 pages on California. Wonderful early travel guide.
