The essays in the first part of the book offer historiographical analyses and experiment with methods, while the second part presents hands-on case studies ranging from Cairo, Istanbul, Aleppo, and Jerusalem to Ankara, Tunis, and Fez, covering the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
