Parrot was born in Karlsruhe on October 14, 1792. What distinguished him from an ordinary adventurer was that he was the son of a scientist father. His father, Georg Friedrich Parrot, was the first president of the University of Dorpat (now the University of Tartu) and a pioneering scholar in optics and physics.
