Qin Shi Huang (260–210 BC) was the King of the state of Qin who conquered all other Warring States and united China in 221 BC. Rather than maintain the title of king borne by the Shang and Zhou rulers, he ruled as the First Emperor of the Qin dynasty from 220 to 210 BC. The title emperor would continue to be borne by Chinese rulers for the next two millennia. One of the first projects the young king accomplished while he was alive was the construction of his own tomb. Qin Shi Huang ordered General Meng Tian with 300,000 men to begin construction. It was constructed over a period of 38 years, from 246 to 208 BC. It is situated underneath a 76-meter-tall tomb mound. The layout of the mausoleum is modeled on the Qin capital of Xianyang, divided into inner and outer cities. The circumference of the inner city is 2.5 km and the outer is 6.3 km.
