Sinop is the pearl of the Black Sea on the south coast of a peninsula. Sinop is a lovely, cozy Anatolian coastal town where the fish restaurants and cafes are by the main harbor, crowded with fishermen’s boats. The dark blue waves wash long sandy beaches of the lush green landscape of Sinop.
Sinope was the first emporion along the Black Sea coast, founded by the Ionian town of Miletus in the Archaic period. It boosted seafaring and maritime trade in the Black Sea, facilitating trade in goods from the Meander valley with Black Sea peoples. Soon, Sinope flourished and established its own emporia along the north and south coasts of the Black Sea.
Sinope, an ancient town of glorious past, had structures embellished with exquisite, colorful mosaics surviving from Roman times, under the modern housing. The Mosaics, figural representations of mythological themes and personifications, and colorful carpets of geometric ornaments, testify to the wealth and rich cultural life of the Sinopeans.
