Published on the occasion of the exhibition ''Consuming the Orient'' held at the Ottoman Bank Archive and Research Centre between November 15, 2007 and March 2, 2008, this catalogue tells the story of how the Orient has often been turned by the West into yet another commodity for mass consumption, from travel posters to cigarette packs, from postcards to ornaments, from advertisements to comic strips. A closer look at the way in which the Orient was represented in Western consumer societies reveals a number of images and stereotypes revolving around four major themes: exoticisim, ethnography, eroticism, and history.
