ROBERT OLEN BUTLER'S third novel, ''Countrymen of Bones,'' examines the metaphors men find to justify their violence. There are, Mr. Butler suggests, many kinds of violence: personal and impersonal, ritualized and secular, finite and infinite, functional and impulsive. At the bottom of the scale is the ordinary violence arising out of simple anger at a disappointing world.

Two of the principal characters in ''Countrymen of Bones'' are scientists. For Coulter, a physicist working on the atomic bomb toward the end of World War II, violence is a fascination with limits or boundaries, with causation itself, with ''the potential at the center of things.'' His violence is amoral.

For Darrell, an archeologist, violence is ritual, an underlining in blood of a meaning so important that it appears to transcend human life.
