The book is divided into three parts, each of which has a separate reference list. Part I, The Framework - sedimentary basins and mechanisms - considers the various types of basin and their formation. A second section is concerned with the sedimentary processes which result in diagenetic alteration of sediments and petroleum formation. Part II is entitled Hydrocarbon fields. The physical and chemical characteristics of oils and gases are reviewed, as are aspects of hydrocarbon generation, migration and accumulation. Part III deals with the Petroleum Provinces into which oil and gas accumulations are grouped. The main types of province are summarized, and ten major producing areas (the Middle East, USSR, North Sea, North America, Mexico, Venezuela, Sahara, Niger Delta, SE Asia and Wester Europe) are reviewed in terms of their structural and production characteristics. A final section is devoted to petroleum exploration and resource estimation.
