While a lot of fiction and non-fiction gets written about India, we see fewer books about Pakistan (unless involving Islamists / Taliban etc). Empires of the Indus captures the story of travel from the mouth of this great river to it's source on the Tibetian plateau. Along the way we encounter many aspects of world history which are not widely recognised: the pre-Islamic cultures which still exist in the mountains today, the importance the region played in the development of Buddhism etc. as well as the arrival of the Greeks, the rise and fall of civilisations etc. This is not a history book however. It is a book about people. We reflect upon the modern societies which exist along the banks of the Indus and the problems they encounter. Overall, an excellent read and an unexpected gem of a book.
