The five plays included in this volume range over some sixty years from the close of the fifteenth century to the begin- ning of Elizabeth I's reign, and represent drama in the formative period preceding the achieve- ment of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Their authors were highly gifted amateurs, catering for the entertainment of special circles. Henry Medwall, chaplain to Cardinal Morton, wrote Fulgens and Lucrece, our first known secular play, for performance in his patron's hall; John Heywood's farce, The Four PP, was probably produced at Court; Nicholas Udall, a school- master, wrote Ralph Roister Doister for his boys; the rustic play, Gammer Gurton's Needle, was written by a Cambridge don for an academic audience; and George Gascoigne's Supposes, the first English prose comedy, was written for the 1566 revels of Gray's Inn. The plays have been edited by Frederick S. Boas, who has also provided an Intro- duction and notes.
