Articles by expert contributors (a strong point of the book) such as Thomas Cochran, Dan Reicher, and S. Jacob Scherr of the Natural Resources Defense Council describe the nuclear weapons production complex, the dangers of radioactive waste, the transportation of military cargoes, the environmental effects of nuclear testing, and the psychological and economic costs of preparing for war. But despite the wealth of factual information, the book fails to present the political context behind the environmental mess. Combined with the choppiness of the editing, this title is a somewhat frustrating experience for readers expecting the first comprehensive political analysis of the environmental and safety debacle still
