The 150th anniversary of the death of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is an occasion worthy of bringing to mind, with an exhibition, the playwright Goethe and his major dramatic work "Faust". Goethe's Faust tragedy, translated to date into 57 languages, has since its first performance been the subject of intense thought as to presentation and interpretation on the part of the artistic and scientific worlds. Always a challenge to theatrical directors, there were particularly in the Federal Republic of Germany between the years 1956 to 1980, significant and exemplary new interpretations for a wide range of audiences. This exhibition attempts, within the framework of possibilities offered, to objectively analyse a selection of celebrated, and not only entirely undisputed, performances directed by Fritz Kortner, Gustaf Gründgens, Ernst Schröder, Heinrich Koch, Hans Hollmann, Claus Peymann and Hansgünther Heyme.
