For the 150th anniversary of the recognition of La Salette (episcopal decree of September 19, 1851), as studied by the Church, here are the Secrets of the Marian Apparition. The secret of Fatima had barely been proclaimed by the express will of John Paul II when the Secrets of La Salette emerged. Written by Mélanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud for Pius IX, they were hand-delivered to him on Friday, July 18, 1851, around 1:30 p.m., by delegates of the Bishop of Grenoble. Silence surrounded their fate from that moment until the archives of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith were opened to specialists and they were discovered on October 2, 1999, for the comprehensive study we are publishing. In writing them, the two shepherds had asked for the spelling of difficult words: "Pontiff" for Maximin, and "Antichrist, infallibly, defiled," for Melanie.
