The geo-strategic location of Osijek with the bridge opening up the route into Central Europe was well perceived by the Ottoman strategists and on one of their campaigns in 1526 the town was conquered and immediately transformed into a fortress with strong walls and towers, which defended both the settlement and the Drava crossing. In the following 150 years all Ottoman campaigns in Vienna or Hungary moved via Osijek. In order for the army, carriages and cannons to easily cross the Drava and the marshlands all the way through to Baranya plateau in 1566 Suleiman Kanuni had a wooden bridge built; it was made of oak and almost 8 kilometers long. Travel writers and statesman of the time were stunned with this unseen construction and proclaimed it the eighth world wonder, and numerous etchers and painters tried to represent it to the European public.
