The Niobium 2001 Symposium took place in a very special year, for two memorable reasons: first, 2001 marked the 200th Anniversary of Niobium, which was discovered in 1801 by the British chemist, Charles Hatchett; and second, it had been twenty years since the last Symposium, Niobium 81, which was held in San Francisco, California in 1981.
Although niobium was discovered 200 years ago, it was only after the development of large deposits in Canada and Brazil in the mid-1950's that it took its rightful place, both in industry and history.
After the emerging and dynamic markets of the 1960's and 1970's, a long period of stabilisation occured in the 1980's. It is self evident that the growth in new products, coupled with a strong global economy, influenced the niobium market in the last decade. However, today we see the possibility of a second period of stability in the demand for niobium.
