Space and form, the two central elements of architecture, represent the focus of an investigation that spans from the early buildings of the Egyptians, via those of antiquity, the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, down to the architecture of the present. The contents of this work are not a history of building as such, but rather the account of an architect who sets out over and over again to examine the particular terms of reference from which space and form were derived in different periods of history. Since, however, space cannot be regarded in isolation from use, nor form detached from meaning and structure, these aspects also play an important role.
Jürgen Joedicke, who is known as an architect and who is one of the few internationally recognized German architectural theorists, demonstrates once again in this work his ability to portray complex sets of relationships in a comprehensive manner.
