Following a 7 year long preparatory period by an international team of experts, a magnificent exhibition was held at Topkapı Palace Museum between June 6 and September 6, 2000 by the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture and Türkiye İş Bankası. 247 portraits covering a period of over 400 years from 1480 through 1920s were selected including those from the Palace archives. The work is divided into six chapters: Word and image; first forays 1450-1550; the House of Osman 1550-1600; extending the tradition 1600-1700; from book to canvas 1700-1800; propagating the imperial image: tasvir-i hümayun 1800-1922.
