Açıklama
The Flamingo’s Smile: Reflections in Natural History is a collection of essays by evolutionary biologist and science writer Stephen Jay Gould, first published in 1985. Most of the pieces originally appeared in his long-running monthly column, “The View of Life,” for Natural History magazine.
Across the collection, Gould explores many of the themes that define his work: evolution and its public understanding, the history of science, scientific biography, probability, and the ways common sense can both help and mislead scientific thinking.
The title essay, “The Flamingo’s Smile,” examines how behavior can shape physical form over time, using the flamingo’s beak and tongue as an example. Other essays range across topics such as the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), the extinction of the dinosaurs, the Omphalos hypothesis, and the role of taxonomy in understanding the natural world.
