This book aims at contextualizing the Orthodox Church-consisting of the Patriarchates of Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem and Alexandria-vis-à-vis the Ottoman central administration in the changing Ottoman realities of the eighteenth century. It proposes to trace the changes in the interaction between the Ottoman administration and the Orthodox Church, mostly but not exclusively through berats, i.e. the appointment documents issued by the Ottoman administration for the Orthodox patriarchs. Berats refer in Ottoman bureaucracy to a certain type of order issued by the sultan that enables their addressees to hold an office, to have the usufruct of a property, or to benefit from a source of revenue, a privilege or an exemption. Hence, berats constitute the most official-and most binding within the Ottoman bureaucracy-documents that set out the terms of interaction between the office holder, in this case the Orthodox patriarchs, and the Ottoman administration...
