The wise anarchist writer Leo Tolstoy remains a living treasure through his works, his opposition to exploitation and dogma, and his questions and arguments. Influenced by many people and sources—including the Rig Veda, Laozi, and Henry David Thoreau—he in turn influenced values embraced by figures such as Gandhi. He was ostracised by the Church he criticised and threatened with death in the name of religion. His writings were censored under both the Tsarist and Soviet regimes. Readers gained access to his complete works only in the late 1980s, during the Gorbachev era.
