The Roman historian, Titus Livius, mentioned Toledo in his descriptions of the doings of Marcus Fulvius, who conquered the city at the head of the Roman legions. He wrote: Toletum, ibi parva urbis erat, set loco munito". Much has been written about the city since then. In the attempt to decipher the palimpsest of the civilizations which have left their mark on the city, poets, archaeologists, philosophers, historians and even theologians have investigated its every aspect, casting light on its most secret places and describing its monuments.
